My name is Caroline Ash. I am a registered veterinary surgeon. But since January 2012, I have become a registered Buteyko practitioner, teaching people how they may breathe and sleep more easily. If you would like to talk to me about whether you could use Buteyko to help you or someone you care for, please click here to contact me to discuss your situation!

My Personal Testimonial and Why I Decided to Become a Buteyko Practitioner.
People ask me “Can anyone really do anything about sleep apnoea?” My answer is a definite “YES!!” I used to have severe sleep apnoea but not anymore! I used to suffer daily with almost overwhelming fatigue, but not anymore!
I used to have a portable ventilator called a CPAP machine to keep me breathing when I was asleep. I thought I would have it for life. Losing weight can do away with sleep apnoea, but the health professional who diagnosed my condition told me that losing weight would not help me, because I was not carrying excess weight.
Then I heard about Buteyko. I was very sceptical but my husband encouraged me to do it. In December 2009, 16 days after finishing that basic Buteyko course, I had an overnight sleep study (also called a polysomnograph test). It showed that then I had only mild intermittent sleep apnoea and I did not need to use a CPAP machine! I kept practising the daily breathing exercises to train my body to breathe in a normal, healthy way, free of sleep apnoea. Four months later, in April 2010, I had another overnight sleep study, and this time it found no evidence of sleep apnoea! Three years later, in December 2013, I had another overnight sleep study, and it showed that I am still free from sleep apnoea! But the best thing for me has been that I have a lot more energy, I do not suffer from almost overwhelming day-time sleepiness, and I just find it easier to breathe (even though I was never diagnosed with any day-time breathing problem).
After doing Buteyko changed my life like that, I felt strongly that everyone should have at least the chance to know about Buteyko breathing retraining. So eventually I decided to do teacher training with the Buteyko Institute of Breathing and Health, and that is how Buteyko Tasmania came about.
